You signed a lease with the landlord to utilize the space in their apartment or home and you enjoyed your time there. You paid the rent, they handled the maintenance, and it was a good relationship while it lasted. Whether the lease runs up and you are ready to move or you are looking for a move later on, you may wonder about some of the rules that are in place when it comes to   alerting the landlord that you are ready to move out.

You should find some of the rules about moving out in your lease, so that is a good place to start. The landlord should have put down some of the rules in the lease, and these should match up to some of the state laws in your area as well. Read this when you first move into the apartment and then refresh your memory when it is time to move out of the apartment.

Most lease agreements are going to require you to give 30 days’ notice before you end the lease so the landlord will have time to look for a new tenant and can be prepared for the end of the rental payments when you move out. There are some areas where you may need to give 50 or 90 days’ notice before you move out. If you do not give the right notice, you may have to pay for the extra rent on the months’ that you are out or pay some fees to handle it.

If there is an emergency and you are not able to wait out that amount of time, then talk to the landlord or the property manager. They may be willing to talk it out with you and make an agreement, but you need to let them know ahead of time. If you just leave the apartment, then they will not be as agreeable to a negotiation and you will be charged for those extra months and the fees for leaving too early.
