Acousto-Optic Q-Switch Modulators: How They Work & Key Product Options

Acousto-optic Q-switch modulators are core devices for generating high-intensity pulsed laser light, designed to work directly inside laser cavities. Their main job is to control the laser cavity’s “Q factor” (a measure of energy loss) to create pulses. Here’s the simple breakdown: when an RF (radio frequency) signal is active, some of the cavity’s energy diffracts out, causing energy loss and stopping the laser from oscillating. When the RF signal turns off, the cavity’s energy loss drops fast—and a strong laser pulse is released.

What to Consider When Choosing an Acousto-Optic Q-Switch

To pick the right Q-switch for your setup, focus on these key parameters—they ensure the device matches your laser system:
  • Wavelength: Must align with your laser cavity’s wavelength (e.g., 10.6μm, 2.7μm, 2μm).
  • Optical power density: Makes sure the Q-switch can handle your laser’s power without damage.
  • Polarization state: Needs to match your laser’s polarization to keep performance steady.
  • Beam diameter: Should fit the size of the laser beam in your cavity.
  • Diffraction efficiency: Higher efficiency means less energy waste and stronger pulses.
  • Cooling mode: Determines how the device manages heat (critical for long-term use).
Our Q-switches also use unique, in-house manufacturing and packaging technologies. These designs boost heat dissipation and keep the laser beam stable, resulting in durable, compact products. For the best performance, we suggest using acousto-optic drivers made specifically for Q modulation—they’re tuned to match your laser’s cavity length, pulse repetition frequency, wavelength, and output power.

Acousto-Optic Q-Switch Series by Wavelength

We offer three main Q-switch series, each tailored to different laser cavity wavelengths:

10.6μm Acousto-Optic Q-Switch Series

Built for 10.6μm laser cavities, this series uses the interaction between ultrasonic waves and light to enable Q-switching. It has high diffraction efficiency, which helps create strong pulses, and relies on water cooling to manage heat—ideal for setups that generate more thermal energy.

2.7μm Acousto-Optic Q-Switch Series

Designed for 2.7μm laser cavities, this series also leverages acousto-optic interaction. It stands out for minimal “insertion loss” (little energy is lost when light passes through) and is made with high-quality fused quartz. A special anti-reflection film (developed with unique technology) lets it handle very high laser power while resisting corrosion—great for long-term, high-demand use.

2μm Acousto-Optic Q-Switch Series

This series works with 2μm laser cavities, using acousto-optic interaction to control the cavity’s Q factor. Like other models, its main goal is to generate high-intensity pulsed light, making it suitable for applications that need precise, powerful laser pulses.

Matching Acousto-Optic Q-Switch Drivers

To get the most out of your Q-switch, we offer two dedicated driver series, each built for specific power needs:

V-Type Acousto-Optic Q-Switch Driver

This RF driver supports Q-switches that require less than 40W of driving power. It includes practical features like digital modulation, analog modulation, and “first pulse suppression”—tools that help you fine-tune and shape the laser beam to fit your application.

W-Type Acousto-Optic Q-Switch Driver

For Q-switches needing up to 70W of driving power, the W-type driver is a better fit. By adjusting the input settings for digital and analog modulation, you can control three key pulse traits: pulse frequency, pulse width, and beam amplitude. This flexibility makes it easy to tailor the laser output to your exact needs.
