Heart Transplant Market Overview | Emerging Technologies & Trends
According to FutureWise analysis the market for heart transplant in 2025 is US$ 11.92 billion, and is expected to reach US$ 25.10 billion by 2033 at a CAGR of 9.76%. The demand for heart transplantation is increasing due to the rise in end-stage heart failure and limited effectiveness of long-term medications. Improvements in organ preservation, better immunosuppressive drugs, and donor heart optimization technologies are boosting transplant success rates. Additionally, expanding global transplant programs and improved patient survival rates are further driving market growth.
Heart transplantation is a medical procedure that involves replacing a damaged or diseased heart with a healthy one, allowing the recipient's heart to function normally. This option is generally considered for patients who are at high risk of developing end-stage heart disease or for those who have exhausted all other treatment options.
A healthy heart can be preserved for up to six hours if kept frozen before transplantation. The procedure typically involves obtaining a heart from a deceased donor. There are two main types of heart transplant procedures: an orthotopic procedure, where the recipient's heart is removed and replaced with the donor's heart, and a heterotopic procedure (or "piggyback" transplant), where the recipient's damaged heart remains in place to support the new heart.
Heart failure in adults can arise from various causes such as weakened heart muscle (cardiomyopathy), coronary arterial disease, heart valve disease, congenital heart defects, and uncontrollable abnormal heart rhythms (ventricular arrhythmias). In children, heart failure is often linked to either cardiomyopathy or congenital heart defects. Additionally, some patients may qualify for a multiorgan transplant, in which a heart transplant is combined with the transplantation of another organ.
Transplantation involves transferring an organ from one individual to another to replace a missing or damaged organ. There are different types of grafts: autografts involve transplanting organs or tissue within the same individual, while allografts involve transplants between individuals of the same species. These allografts can be either cadaveric or from living donors.
It is important to note that not everyone is a suitable candidate for a heart transplant. Factors such as overall health can impact eligibility for the surgery. For a heart to be viable for transplantation, the procedure must occur within four hours after the donor's heart is removed.
Hearts are typically offered first to transplant centers near the donor hospital before being made available to those at a greater distance. To facilitate communication about possible organ offers, transplant centers provide candidates with a pager or cell phone, which must remain charged and on at all times. Once notified of a potential donor heart, the transplant team and the patient have a limited timeframe to respond, prompting the need for immediate travel to the transplant center. Many transplant centers also provide private air transport or other arrangements to expedite this process.
